Obesity....
In most cases, obesity starts in someones childhood. It’s usually related with bad eating habits, that are defined by each one of us, or sometimes by our parents!
Obesity is considered the pest of the 21st century.
In Portugal about 53% of the population suffers from excessive weight and about 14% is obese.
Portugal is one of the EU countries with the highest rate of child obesity.
Obesity results from successive positive energy balance, in which the amount of ingested energy is much higher than the amount of energy used by the organism. It also leads to serious social and psychologial disorders: social isolation, employment, educational and social discrimination, low self-esteem, depression and, in more severe cases, suicide.
Obesity prevention is achieved through changes in lifestyle, which rely primarily on the restructuring of dietary habits, increasing physical activity and sport and also in the implementation of educational, school and institutional programs, multisectoral nature.
Fish, white and lean meats should be preferred to fat and red meats, and the intake of cereals, fruits and vegetables should be increased.
